Overview

Werrong Beach Track drops sharply from Otford down the escarpment to Werrong (also known as Hell Hole) Beach. The climb back out is relentless — many hikers find the return harder than the descent.

Werrong is a legally recognised clothing-optional beach. NPWS advises against swimming due to rips, rocks and surf exposure.

Why swimming is not advised

  • Strong rips and dumpers common
  • Rock shelves and submerged hazards
  • No patrol — remote rescue is difficult
  • Check BeachSafe and NPWS before any coastal walk in this area

Preparation

Wear sturdy shoes with ankle support. Trekking poles help on the climb out. Carry plenty of water — the track is exposed and steep.

Start early to avoid midday heat. Tell someone your plans; mobile reception is limited.

— checked against NPWS / BeachSafe where applicable.
